Climb for Clean Air Adventure

Recently, we had the pleasure of catching up with Jonathan Mack, who embarked on an unforgettable climb to the summit of Mount Rainier.

Jonathan’s climbing team was led by the expert guidance of Rainier Mountaineering Inc. (RMI), the oldest and largest guide service on Mt. Rainier. Lou Whittaker founded RMI in 1969, and the organization has been at the forefront of guiding climbs on Mt. Rainier for over five decades. RMI offers a diverse range of program choices catering to climbers of all abilities. These options include climbs of the mountain’s classic routes, expedition skills seminars, and specialized skills clinics.

During Jonathan Mack’s climb, which was part of the American Lung Association’s Climb for Clean Air, he and his party had the opportunity to meet Rose Vanderhoof. Coincidentally, Rose, at the age of 78, had just become the oldest woman to summit Mount Rainier. Their paths crossed as Rose was descending from the summit while Jonathan’s group was approaching Camp Muir.

The climb showcased the exceptional services provided by RMI Expeditions.

The group hiked up to Camp Muir on a warm Tuesday afternoon. They were able to successfully reach the summit on Wednesday morning. Jonathan expressed his gratitude for RMI’s expertise, guidance, and knowledge, making the entire experience truly memorable. Jonathan eagerly looks forward to future climbs with RMI. His next climb is scheduled for February 2025 to climb two of the highest peaks in Mexico, Pico de Orizaba and Ixtaccihuatl.

To qualify for a summit attempt with RMI, participants must undergo physical training for this challenging event. The climb requires a registration fee, which contributes to participants’ fundraising goals. The funds raised assist the American Lung Association in its efforts to provide community-based education programs, fight for cleaner air standards, and fund life-saving research.
