Not every day at Mount Rainier brings clear skies. Sometimes rain or wildfire smoke changes your plans. Fortunately, the mountain and its gateway towns offer many indoor-friendly activities. You can explore history, art, food, and cultureโ€”without worrying about the weather.

Inside Mount Rainier National Park

Longmire Museum

Discover exhibits on the parkโ€™s history, wildlife, and geology. This museum is open year-round. In addition, the Longmire Plaza Comfort Station restrooms remain open daily.

Step indoors to see exhibits on glaciers, climbing, and the natural world. The visitor center also has a bookstore and short films. Furthermore, the large windows provide mountain views when visibility improves.

Paradise Inn

Step into the historic Paradise Inn, often called the โ€œGreat Lodge of the West.โ€ The grand lobby, with its massive stone fireplace and hand-carved furniture, offers a warm and inviting place to pause. Visitors can browse historic photos on display, relax with a snack or beverage from the cafรฉ, shop for souvenirs in the gift shop, or enjoy a sit-down meal in the dining room.

In the evenings, a piano player sometimes fills the lobby with music, creating a cozy and timeless atmosphere. On a rainy or smoky day, the inn offers comfort, history, and a memorable way to spend time indoors.

Here you can learn about geology, ecology, and cultural history. This is the highest point in the park accessible by car.

This Morton favorite combines food, drinks, and fun under one roof. The menu features house-smoked barbecue, pizzas, burgers, and scratch-made sides. Guests can also enjoy craft beer, cocktails, and small-batch whiskeys. In addition, the venue includes 12 regulation bowling lanes, making it a lively spot to gather indoors on a rainy or smoky day.

Packwood Breweries

Packwood is home to two breweries that make great rainy- or smoky-day stops. Longmire Springs Brewing offers small-batch beers brewed on site, often inspired by the mountain setting. Packwood Brewing Co. serves a rotating lineup of craft beers in a welcoming taproom thatโ€™s popular with both locals and visitors. Each spot provides a relaxed indoor atmosphere where you can enjoy a pint, sample a flight, and take in the friendly small-town vibe.

White Pass Country Historical Museum

This small museum tells the story of the Upper Cowlitz Valley. Artifacts, photos, and displays bring logging, railroads, and pioneer life to life.
