In Memory of Mount Rainier Icon Bronka Sundstrom

Bronka Sundstrom, a legendary figure in mountaineering, departed this world on November 29, 2023, at 98, succumbing to congestive heart failure. As a Holocaust survivor, Bronka Sundstrom’s extraordinary journey, coupled with her indomitable spirit, left an indelible mark on Mount Rainier and the Rainier community.

In 2002, at 77, she achieved an extraordinary feat by becoming the oldest woman to summit Mount Rainier. With Bronka’s encouragement, Rose Vanderhoof, her long-time friend, set a new record in 2023 at 78, breaking the standing record that had endured for just over two decades.

Bronka’s connection with the mountain was a shared journey with her husband, Ake Sundstrom. Ake, also a legendary mountaineer, stood as a fixture on the mountain. Author Bruce Barcott featured the adventurous couple in his book, “The Measure of a Mountain.” Ake passed away on May 31, 2010.

In her 80s, Bronka, alongside fellow mountaineers, attempted to summit Mount Rainier. Adverse weather conditions at Camp Muir compelled the group to turn back during this attempt. On June 29, 2016, at 91, Bronka hiked unassisted from Paradise to Camp Muir and back. She achieved an extraordinary feat, given her age and the climb’s difficulty. Her 95th birthday celebration included a hike at Second Burroughs in Mount Rainier National Park.

Bronka will be remembered as an enduring “lady of the mountain.” Her presence will be greatly missed. Rest in peace, Bronka Sundstrom.
