At Visit Rainier, we recognize and honor the ancestral homeland of the Cowlitz, Muckleshoot, Nisqually, Puyallup, Squaxin Island, Yakama, and Coast Salish peoples, which encompasses the land now known as Mount Rainier National Park. For generations, these Indigenous Peoples have upheld their role as dedicated stewards of this landscape, passing down invaluable teachings from Elders. Their enduring Traditional Knowledge and Management of this Sacred Land stand as a testament to their unwavering commitment. In this land acknowledgment, we pay tribute to each nation’s legacy of landscape stewardship.
Did you know? The native Puyallup Tribe name for Mount Rainier is Tahoma, or Tacoma, meaning ‘the mother of waters’. Various Native American names for Mount Rainier include “Tahoma”, “Takhoma”, and “Ta-co-bet”.
