September 12 is the annual Civil War Train at the railroad. The Mt. Rainier Scenic Railroad hosts this annual one day living history event with the Washington Civil War Association. Dedicated volunteer reenactors appear (rain or shine) at the depot, on the train and at the museum for the 10:00 AM, 12:45 PM and 3:30 PM departures. Guests can expect to see citizens and soldiers in period attire. The volunteer reenactors stage a small encampment at the depot and there’s a brief skirmish at the museum! Seating on the train is limited. Advance reservations are strongly recommended. Please note the skirmish that takes place at the museum will feature realistic fighting scenes complete with gunfire. Reserve your train tickets by calling us directly at 888-STEAM-11 Ext. 3 or book here online at mrsr.com.
Also scheduled for September 12 is a concert starring the bluesy Washington Blues Society winner, Polly O’Keary (see video below for her “Stop Train” single). The concert takes place at the ampitheater in nearby Ashford, WA from 2:00 PM – 5:00 PM. For more information about the concert visit the event webpage. Ticketholders on the 10:00 AM train will have enough time to enjoy their steam train ride and museum visit and then grab lunch either in Elbe or Ashford before the concert begins that afternoon. If you’ve never been to the ampitheater the new venue is right next to the Ashford park just a short drive from the Nisqually entrance of Mount Rainier National Park. With Mount Rainier National Park so close by visitors may want to make a weekend out of it and stay overnight in the area to take advantage of the scenic byway, hikes and more.
