Cayuse Pass to Open Friday May 27

State Route123/Cayuse Pass Scheduled to Reopen by 8 a.m. Friday, May 27, In Time for Memorial Day Weekend.

Washington State Department of Transportation reports there is no reopening date set on Chinook Pass released at this time. Relentless winter weather with continued snowfall and high avalanche danger will keep State Route 410/Chinook Pass closed until it is safe to reopen.

Maintenance crews with the Washington State Department of Transportation will continue to clear the roadway and conduct avalanche control as weather allows. WSDOT hopes to reopen SR 410/Chinook Pass in the next several weeks.

On May 27, the section of SR 410 from Crystal Mountain Boulevard to the junction of SR 123 will be open and all of SR 123. People are prohibited from traveling east on SR 410 past the junction to Chinook Pass.

Mount Rainier National Park

Within Mount Rainier National Park, travelers can access the parking lot at the Grove of the Patriarchs but cannot proceed farther west on Stevens Canyon Road. The Grove of the Patriarchs trail remains closed due to damage to the pedestrian suspension bridge. The White River entrance station and picnic area will open next week. The White River Campground, Sunrise Road and Tipsoo Lake and picnic area remain closed.

Winter closures

Cayuse and Chinook passes close each winter due to high avalanche risk, poor road conditions, and no emergency response services within close proximity. Both highways closed to vehicle traffic for the season on Nov. 18, 2021. WSDOT and the National Park Service collaborate each spring to reopen the highways.
